What does the Sacristan Coordinator do and how can I get involved?

To be a Sacristan, a total commitment must be made as it is a labor of love. Briefly stated, it goes beyond the preparation of the necessary items needed for the service at the time as it encompasses other duties that the sacristan is responsible for, such as:

• Unlocking doors before services so that no one is outside waiting to enter and then locking the doors after being certain that no one remains in the church after services
• Presenting a place of comfort, safety and cleanliness for the faithful so they have a quiet and peaceful place for worship
• Making certain all the necessary participants for the service at the time are present and in place, namely servers ushers lectors extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist
• Arranging seating for special celebrations requiring visiting clergy
• Being ready to assist the celebrants and/or the faithful should there be questions or if the need to do something arises
• Keeping the sacred vessels polished taking vestments for cleaning and pressing ordering supplies that are necessary for the various services such as the various types of candles, bread, wine, incense, tapers, linens, booklets, baskets, etc.
